EXHIBITION: THE HOLY GRAIL

Project Type

Exhibition

Date

Fall 2022

Location

Lommel, Belgium

In 2022, Sam Aldridge participated in an artist residency at GlazenHuis as part of The Holy Grail, a collaborative project with glass artist and author Ed Schmid. The residency took Ed Schmid’s influential manual Advanced Glassworking Techniques as its starting point, treating the text not as instruction alone but as a framework for inquiry, interpretation, and dialogue.

Working in the museum’s hot glass studio, Aldridge translated the book’s step-by-step processes into a series of blown forms, using repetition and constraint as tools for research. In parallel, Schmid examined historic works from the GlazenHuis collection, sketching and visually dissecting their forms within the museum space. Together, the exhibition presented technique as both practice and investigation, reflecting on process, lineage, and the quiet pursuits that continue to shape glassmaking.
